For me, that’s where Alabama began to reveal flaws in its character. After the game, Tennessee’s fans rushed the field and Alabama receiver Jermaine Burton took a swipe at a female fan. It was an egregious lack of judgment from a player Saban plucked out of the transfer portal in the offseason. Instead of suspending Burton for his actions, Saban kept him in the starting lineup.
Does Saban part ways with his offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien? Is it time for defensive coordinator Pete Golding, who was arrested for a DUI in the offseason, to leave the mothership and “pursue opportunities elsewhere?” Saban has said that his assistants are not to blame, but new urgency couldn’t hurt.
After a wild weekend of conference championship games, the College Football Playoff committee settled on No.1 Georgia, No.2 Michigan, No.3 TCU and No.4 Ohio State for the College Football Playoff. The committee moved Alabama to No.5, which sent the Crimson Tide to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. Tennessee was No.6 despite defeating Alabama for the first time in 15 years. The Volunteers will play No.7 Clemson in the Orange Bowl.
Alabama will be upset after missing out on the playoff, but the Crimson Tide suffered no injustices here. No one is ever robbed by failing to back its way into a playoff. Death Valley is where Alabama’s dreams of the playoffs died. Don’t blame the players, though. This one’s on Saban and his assistants.
