“I do feel the need to talk about this.”
Ahead of the book's release on September 24, Van Ness talked toabout his tough past in an emotional interview. "I’ve had nightmares every night for the past three months because I’m scared to be this vulnerable with people," he said. "It’s hard for me to be as open as I want to be when there are certain things I haven’t shared publicly," he added. "There are issues that need to be talked about.
The "issues" he's referring to include his history with drug and sex addiction — both of which stemmed from thehe was subjected to as a young boy — and testing positive for H.I.V. at 25. He was highlighting a client's hair in the salon he worked for at the time when he suddenly fainted. After visiting a Planned Parenthood and getting tested, his status was confirmed.
Shortly after getting his diagnosis, Van Ness stopped the hard drugs and restarted his life in Los Angeles with some money he received from a family trust. Now, seven years later, he hopes to debunk many of the common misconceptions about living with H.I.V. in his memoir — that, and to show others they're not alone. He also now considers himself an "out-and-proud member of the beautiful H.I.V.-positive community.
The positive feedback has been overwhelming so far: Myriad fans have taken to social media to show their support, praising the star for his vulnerability and thanking him for sharing his story. "It's so meaningful to see celebrities with HIV and other STIs living their lives openly and with joy.
