It’s funny how time changes things. Jonathan Simkhai’s parents are Iranian immigrants and preserved many elements of their culture, small and large. For example, Simkhai remembers opening the freezer at home, wanting to find Ben & Jerry’s but discovering pistachio and cardamom varieties instead. This season the designer, who is now a father himself, wanted to rediscover the “flavors” of his youth.
This wasn’t an adventurous collection; Simkhai stayed close to home and further developed the pieces his customers look for, like slip and trench dressing. The knits, some with fringe and others with corset detailing, looked lavish. And there were, as always, lovely surprises: the bow-trimmed open back on a covered-up look, a coat with a tail of printed paisley.
Simkhai’s not a storytelling designer, nor is he one to follow trends, but like Area, for fall he was drawn to the work of Madame Grès, which could be read in the structured bodices as well as his use of pleats. This is an interesting undercurrent because, broadly speaking, classicism is often a sort of antidote to decadence, which has of late been too much with us.
