Jon Hamm recalls the first time he saw Tom Cruise on the Top Gun: Maverick set. Hamm joins Cruise in the new movie, with the latter reprising his role as Pete"Maverick" Mitchell, the highly-skilled hot-shot pilot from the 1986 Tony Scott-directed Top Gun. Now, Maverick must train a new generation of pilots for a daring mission.
Hamm stars as Vice Admiral Beau"Cyclone" Simpson, the commander of the US Naval Air Forces who has recruited Cruise and the team of trainees for the dangerous mission. Like Tom Skerritt's Commander Mike"Viper" Metcalf from the original Top Gun film, Simpson is the voice of authority struggling to keep Maverick in line, reminding the hothead that he is reckless.
The first day. Easy. I walked onto the set, which was in an aircraft hangar. There were two F-18 Super Hornets parked, and there was a two-and-a-half story American flag. Everybody was there in costume and in full gear. I kind of got lost when I first walked to set, but once I finally walked on set, I heard applause as someone said, “There he is!” And I said to myself, “Who is that? I can’t see.” And it was Tom Cruise with a big million-dollar smile.
Cruise is well-known for his exuberance and enthusiastic personality, and his broad, toothy grin is practically the actor's trademark. It is no surprise that Hamm was given such a personal greeting by the Academy Award-nominated actor. Similarly, when Renée Zellweger first met Cruise for the critically-acclaimed film Jerry Maguire, she found the actor quite personable and easy to like.
Top Gun: Maverick is shaping up to be the blockbuster to beat this summer. Reviews for the film have been nothing but glowing, citing exhilarating stunts that feature the actors in real F/A-18 Superhornet fighter jets, as well as stellar performances by the cast. Cruise's penchant for hard work while placing an importance for camaraderie with his fellow cast and crew is one of the reasons why the star has maintained his status as one of Hollywood's premiere leading men for decades.
