Lee has not been accused of any wrongdoing and is not mentioned by name in court documents.
The federal indictment unsealed earlier this month said “City Staffer B” went to Las Vegas with Englander in 2017. The staffer left the councilman’s office in June 2017, around the same time Lee departed Englander’s office. Lee would not confirm if he is the Staffer B mentioned in the documents.
More than 1,100 people have signed a petition, calling on Lee to resign. Chatsworth resident Richard Mathews, a former volunteer on Lundquist’s campaign who launched the petition, said Lee “must resign immediately for the good of the city.” Lee supporters stood behind the councilmember Friday. “The public John Lee that most residents have seen is a family man who takes his family to all sorts of public functions and that’s the image that stands before anything else,” said Joe Kozul, Northridge resident and Northridge East Neighborhood Council Education Committee member, adding that Englander’s guilty plea had nothing to do with Lee.
Lee took office last year, defeating astrophysicist and college educator Lundquist in a special election. Lundquist appeared to have lost the rematch, too, according to results posted Friday by the county registrar/recorder’s office.
