“Nothing against Trey, but he just doesn't have the game experience underneath him," Montana said.
Lance will be entering his third season next fall but has minimal pro experience. The former No. 3 overall pick barely played in 2021 and suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the second game of the 2022 season. As he did last year, and the year before that, Garoppolo presents an attractive stopgap option. But the 31-year-old is a free agent without a franchise tag clause, meaning the 49ers would have to compete against other teams in the free agent market to retain his services.
The ongoing saga over the quarterback position will continue for the rest of the offseason, but two top names who have long been linked to the 49ers are apparently off the board.
