He wins stakes races for second day in a row at Del Mar Thoroughbred Clubs's fall meeting, leads with four winners so far
When reigning Del Mar jockey champion Juan Hernandez learned nationally rated riders Flavien Prat and John Velazquez would be spending the fall at Del Mar, his reaction was pretty much “bring them on.”
On Saturday, Hernandez rode Bipartisanship to victory in the Kathryn Crosby Stakes, giving the champion of Del Mar’s last two meetings wins in the first two stakes of the 13-day fall meeting. Hernandez also won aboard Handy Dandy in Friday’s feature. “She found a good spot and I just stayed there,” Hernandez continued. “Coming for home, I saw some room on the rail and began to go there. But that closed up pretty quick, so I went outside. Then she got it done.”
Faiza battled Teena Ella for the lead down the backstretch then pulled away on the far turn to finish 3½ lengths ahead of Lily Poo. Teena Ella, the third foal of champion Beholder, faded to sixth in the seven-horse field.The winners of Del Mar’s past four jockey championships will be on the two favorites in today’s feature — the $100,000 Betty Grable, a seven-furlong test for older, California-bred fillies and mares.
