The surgery ended up revealing he had cancer that was spreading."Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.

Carter said he had an MRI in September "and it turned out to be OK." He said scars from the small tumors once detected on his brain were still visible but hadn't changed in size.According to a statement issued from the Carter Center, the former president was getting ready to go turkey hunting, something he is known to frequently do, when he suffered a fall.

The Carter Center said he made plans to teach Sunday school that weekend at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.Former President Jimmy Carter canceled plans to teach Sunday school just days after undergoing surgery for a broken hip.
