It brought emotions — lots of them.in the national championship game at NRG Stadium, closing his signoff with “Thank you for being my friend,” a riff on his famous “Hello, friends” salutation.
“It tore me up pretty good,” Nantz said. “I went back to the room mid-afternoon and knew I needed about two hours by myself to kind of gather myself. Because I felt like my emotions were right there at a tipping point.”Family was close at hand for Nantz on Monday. The broadcast table included a photo of his late mother Doris on the six-month anniversary of her death.
Standing a few feet away was Nancy Hockaday, Nantz’s older sister, someone else who’s been by his side on the Final Four journey for three-plus decades. “I was sad and happy. I know he wants to have more time with his family and kids. But he loves basketball. I know it’s hard for him to walk away but this is what he really wanted.”Nantz said the most difficult part of the night wasn’t calling the game with analysts Bill Raftery and Grant Hill but handling the pregame introductions. It brought back memories of being a University of Houston student in the early 1980s in room 101 at Taub Hall.
