Opinion: Jim Gray: ‘Getting tough’ on fentanyl won’t solve the overdose problem. We must end the drug war.

Confronting the fentanyl crisis in Golden StateYes, Senator Umberg, fentanyl is certainly the most dangerous drug in our community, but your legislative suggestions will only nibble around the edges of the problem.

The only way to vastly reduce the deaths and other harms from fentanyl and other presently illicit dangerous drugs is to take away their market. And the only way that will happen is to repeal our failed and hopeless program of drug prohibition and replace it with a strictly regulated and controlled approach, like we do for alcohol.Obviously no approach is perfect, but this one will vastly reduce the death and crime presently involved with these illicit drugs.
