The surreal comedy serves as the latest effort from the Zellner brothers, with Nathan and David directing the movie together on a script written by the latter. The duo are best known for the 2011 drama Kid-Thing, the urban-legend-based drama Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, and the Robert Pattinson-led Western black comedy Damsel.
David Zellner: Well, we've just been obsessed with Bigfoot since we were kids. There's this show called In Search of with Leonard Nimoy hosting, that was the first time we saw the original — it's called the Patterson-Gimlin footage — of the iconic walking across the woods shot. We've just been obsessed with Bigfoot ever since, and had done some shorts and stuff using the creature before, but it all kind of built to this. David Zellner: A little bit.
The first day, anytime you're acting in something, always gives you some kind of breakthrough like, "Oh, okay, if I'm going to be doing this for the next month, I see the in here." And you have this butterfly, and looking at this butterfly, it was so beautiful, but also he's not smart enough to not stick his face in it, or try to eat it. But that's the character. Nathan Zellner: Yeah, it's more of a stereotypical, what some people think of Sasquatch.
Sasquatch Sunset Is An Easy Sell "If You're Into It" Speaking of, how tough of a sell was this? This doesn't seem to be the easiest thing to greenlight. Jesse Eisenberg: Yeah, we did have kind of a vocabulary, though. Very limited, but like the kind of sounds they would make when they're searching for each other versus the kind of sounds they would make when they were arguing. I think we even wrote it down, we'd have like a formalized —Jesse Eisenberg: Yes, exactly.
David Zellner: There wasn't a ton. We wanted to use the baseline of what people were familiar with, with Bigfoot as an entry point, and then from there, personalize it in our own way. And then, it's important that each character have their own distinctive qualities, so we just kind of worked from there. It wasn't much more involved than that.
