Wildwood's mayor said the popular Jersey Shore resort wants to cut down on unruly crowds.
An ordinance passed unanimously by the city’s board of commissioners Wednesday goes into effect in 20 days, officials said.
“We made it so you should have no alcohol at all on the beach, whether it’s open, closed, in a bag — it doesn’t matter,” Mayor Pete Byron told at the meeting. “Every summer brings a different set of issues and everyone wants to know what we’re doing about it.”Possession or consumption of alcohol on the beach or boardwalk will be considered a breach of peace and violators face fines of up to $2,000.The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warning earlier this month that pop-up party called “The Wildwood Beach Linkup” on May 12 and 13 at an undisclosed beach would be shut down by police if promoters didn’t pull the plug.
