Starsa little crazy that his Cowboys are buzz-less. Everywhere else, players are the talk of the town. This is as it should be.Meanwhile, the narrative on the Cowboys isn’t CeeDee Lamb’s ascendance or the singularity of Micah Parsons. Hardly. The storyline is they’re not as good as the team that just got whacked in the playoffs, and the Joneses don’t even have a good argument, much less a plan.
Because they couldn’t settle with their big stars before the advent of free agency, they couldn’t plug holes left by vacating Cowboys. And the price keeps going up on Dak and Lamb, who apparently aren’t predisposed to a home-team discount. For the record, and as much as I hate to admit this, I don’t necessarily have a huge problem with part of the Cowboys’ thinking this offseason. Some of those players needed to leave. But you can’t go into a draft with so many holes to fill. Not only does it put undue pressure on Will McClay to get it right, it violates one of the principles that has afforded him so much success to date.Filling holes with low-level free-agent signings allows you to draft the best player available.
You don’t have to get the nuances of a cone drill to know that, unless they plan to kick Tyler Smith one step to his left, the Cowboys almost certainly must take a tackle in the first round. And a running back the second day. No problem, you say? They need players everywhere, right? Sure, except tight end.The Cowboys’ biggest needs are on the offensive line and at running back. They’re not just needs; they’re priorities. Fortunately, there are several top-end tackles in the draft.
The good news is, we have other things to write and talk about this spring. With a little luck, maybe even into the summer and fall. Could these other distractions become a regular occurrence? Doubtful, but let’s not tell Jerry. He needs to worry about other teams encroaching on his market. And not just the Chiefs.
