Chai will perform at Union Stage on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The members of Chai, an all-women Japanese quartet, usually wear pink. They titled their debut album “Pink.” And when lead singer and keyboardist Mana responded by email via an interpreter to questions about her band and its music, her answers were in pink text.“Pink is cool and cute and fun,” explained Mana, who like bandmates Yuna, Yuuki and Kana uses just her first name. But Japanese women choose the color “less and less as we grow older.
The stylistic shifts were not planned from the start, according to Mana. “We do think that evolving is important, though. We get sick of the same thing and never want to make the same thing twice. This album ‘Chai’ is very non-genre. It’s Chai pop, but our hearts are always punk.”
