Our updated January outlook has some changes in store.
The South could see a repeat of the mild conditions it experienced in December.A sharp divide in January temperatures is expected between a colder than average north and a mild South, according to the latest outlook from The Weather Company, an IBM Business.
Warmer than average conditions are still forecast in the South, but a more expansive area of much above average temperatures compared to our previous outlook is now expected from central and southern Texas eastward through the Gulf Coast region to southern and central Georgia, southern South Carolina and Florida.
January is the coldest month of the year for most areas east of the Rockies, so even with above average temperatures in some areas, it will still be chilly at times. Highs in the West typically range from the 40s on the Pacific Northwest coast to the 60s in the Southwest.Lows in the single digits above and below zero are common in the upper Midwest, Northern Plains and northern New England in January. Blasts of arctic air can send temperatures to levels much colder than this for periods of time.
