We chat with Swarm co-creator Janine Nabers about her new PrimeVideo series, including collaborating with Donald Glover and casting Chloë Bailey:
Janine Nabers reunites with collaborator Donald Glover on Swarm, a new Prime Video series that tackles pop stardom and obsession through the lens of one superfan. Dominique Fishback plays Dre, a young Houstonian woman who, along with her sister Marissa is enamored with pop superstar Ni'Jah. Inspired by the queen herself Beyoncé, Ni'Jah has the world in her grip, but Dre's infatuation takes a much darker turn when her life is turned upside down.
Janine Nabers: Well, it was Donald Glover's idea originally. He came to me with this story of what if we were to write a show about a black woman obsessed with a pop star. And obviously, Donald has his own experiences with being a star of music and having fans, and I've seen people take ownership of him in certain ways. And so that was the kernel of the idea.
Janine Nabers: The first season is is is the only season, and it tells the story of two and a half years of her life. Yes.
