Avatar: The Way of Water would have passed Titanic as the third highest-grossing movie of all time this weekend if it weren't for Titanic's 25th-anniversary re-release. Titanic originally became the highest-grossing movie of all time back in 1997, and while it's since slipped to third place, it's still the oldest movie among the top 10 all-time box office earners by more than a decade.

Avatar: The Way of Water has been claiming the ranks as one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, and was poised to pass Titanic this weekend to become the third highest-grossing movies of all time, but Titanic's return to theaters delayed that accomplishment with a big re-release box office haul.
Titanic's Re-Release Affirms James Cameron's Box Office Dominance This isn't the first time Titanic has returned to theaters since its initial 1997 box office run. Back in 2012, Titanic was re-released as a 3D remaster, earning an astounding $350.4 million worldwide, becoming the 21st highest-grossing movie of 2012. The 25th-anniversary re-release isn't likely to see similar numbers, but its success so far is further proof of James Cameron's box office dominance.
Avatar: The Way of Water's box office has begun to slow down domestically, but its continued international performance should be enough to ensure it still passes Titanic in the next few weeks. With under $4 million separating the two films, Titanic's 25th-anniversary re-release won't be able to hold it off forever, but the timing of its box office surge couldn't be more perfectly timed in order to block Avatar: The Way of Water from taking the third place spot for one more week.
