ARLINGTON, TX - APRIL 26: Chas McCormick #20 of the Houston Astros goes to the wall but cant get to a home run off the bat of Adolis Garcia #53 of the Texas Rangers during the second inning at Globe Life Field on April 26, 2022 in Arlington, Texas.ARLINGTON — It had been six days since Jake Odorizzi’s six-run implosion had Astros fans grimacing through a painstaking first inning, and only two-thirds of one at that.
Expectations for Odorizzi were tenuous at best. He entered Tuesday with more walks than strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .390. He had not fared well against the Rangers, either, 0-1 with a 5.81 ERA in his past seven outings against them.Yordan Alvarez led off with a stand-up double on a deep fly ball that Adolis García appeared to misread, giving Alvarez his first hit in 14 at-bats against lefthanded pitchers this season.
After walking Willie Calhoun to lead off the third inning, Odorizzi retired 12 batters in a row through the end of the sixth, including a six-pitch fourth inning. He survived hard contact on a few fly balls hit to the warning track, but retired six Rangers on flyouts and delivered 50 of his pitches for strikes.
Behind Odorizzi, the Astros offense finally provided some production. Houston scored five runs on six hits, the team’s highest-scoring road game since putting up 13 runs in Anaheim on April 8. Alvarez had another multi-hit game and Kyle Tucker collected three RBIs. Not everyone busted out of slumps; Jose Siri and Chas McCormick remain mired in hitless streaks of 17 and 11 at-bats, respectively.
