Eastlake High record holder will have a year of competition under her belt
Between cross country and track, Eastlake High freshman Jaelyn Williams had an eventful first year of high school. The school record-holder at 800, 1600 and 3200 meters will still run, but after competing in the Nike Nationals in Eugene in mid-June, it will be familiar trail runs leading up to the start of school summer workouts July 19 with the rest of the team.
“The thing I gained most was experience in racing,” said Williams, 15. “Race strategy depends on the competition and in meets where there is a lot of strong competition, I might not run as hard early, so I have something left for the finish. Going out at a scorching 73-second first lap, Williams assumed the lead and for most of the first six laps of the eight-lap race she met her goal of 75-second laps. But in the final 800, when others who had set a more moderate pace made their move, she discovered her tank was empty and her last 400 time of 77 seconds was disappointing.
“The idea is that with a stronger base, I can set that 75 second pace and finish strong. I know what to expect now and I want to step up my game.”
