Kevin Stefanski acknowledged that everyone on the Browns would like some plays back from Sunday’s 23-20 loss to the Falcons, including himself.
One of those was Jacoby Brissett, who whipped the ball into the end zone wall on the fourth and 3 on the Browns’ opening drive, and then threw into triple coverage down the left side for David Bell at the end of the game. The pass was picked off by Dee Alford to seal the Falcons’ victory.
On Brissett’s final play of the game, the third and 23 from the Browns 46 after Joel Bitonio gave up an 8-yard sack, Brissett threw into triple coverage to David Bell down the left side. He may have had some safer options to get Cade York back into field goal range, which would’ve been about a 14-yard pass play.
Overall, he finished 21-of-35 for 234 yards, with no TDs and one pick for a 68.0 rating. He started off OK, going 13-of-18 for 171 yards in the first half for a 101.9 rating. The Browns were lucky that Nick Chubb’s forward progress had been stopped when the ball came out on first and goal from the 1, because Atlanta certainly thought it had the takeaway there.
The Falcons went on to kick the game-winning field goal on that drive, making the miss to Bryant loom large. Of course, Brissett’s play was just one of the many things that could’ve been better in the loss. The Browns, with a depleted defensive line, couldn’t stop the run in the second half against backup running backs, and they gave up that 42-yard pass. Njoku fumbled the ball away in his own territory in the first quarter to start the Falcons at the Browns’ 31. They needed three plays for Cordarelle Patterson to run it in from 13 yards and make it 10-0.
