Jacksonville City Council President Terrance Freeman wants action on Confederate monuments, homelessness, affordable housing and health care access.
that saw a federal judge toss the map the City Council approved in March and also reject a second map crafted by the council in November. The city plans to seek a stay on U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard's ruling to use a map submitted by civil rights organizations that successfully sued the city.
The biggest decision involves the fate of the"Tribute to the Women of the Southern Confederacy" monument that has stood since 1915 in Springfield Park. Mayor Lenny Curry, who removed thefrom James Weldon Johnson Park in June 2020, supports moving the monument out of Springfield Park. He has said such monuments should not be on city-owned land.
Freeman said for the removal option, the council would need to have information about where the monument would end up if taken out of the park.In the past, City Council members have discussed staging a series offrom the University of Virginia's Institute for Engagement and Facilitation to help moderate discussions. As part of those community conversations, five community leaders would attend the meetings and make a recommendation to the City Council.
