The Detroit Lions announced today that former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett will join their organization as an offensive assistant.
Barrett's move into NFL coaching comes following a placement on the retired list by the CFL's Edmonton Elks after suffering an injury in late March. He had previously spent time on the practice squads of the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and Pittsburgh Steelers after going undrafted in 2018.
Barrett will reunite with former Buckeye teammates Taylor Decker and Jeff Okudah in Detroit, while also looking to build chemistry in the offense with former Ohio State guard Jonah Jackson and incoming first round draft pick Jameson Williams. While Barrett may not have seen as much on-field success at the professional level as he did collegiately, his years of experience as a signal caller should translate well into coaching. Barrett won the Big Ten's Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year award three times while at Ohio State, setting numerous conference records along the way while also helping guide the Buckeyes to a National Championship-winning season in 2014-15.
Though this move may sting a bit for Lions fans that moonlight as Wolverine loyalists, Barrett's move to Detroit will no doubt be a boost to the franchise.
