Too often, the goal of representation is tied wholly to optics, and, typically, the ripple effects of new representation take time. Today, we witnessed waves. Maternal mortality and morbidity, a crisis that disproportionately affects women of color, has largely gone overlooked in the Oval. That changed when the executive branch saw its first woman of color go to work. In April, President Biden issued the first-ever for Black Maternal Health Week, and today, for the first time ever, the White House marked a Maternal Health Day of Action.

“The truth is women in our nation—and this is a hard truth—women in our nation are dying. Before, during, and after childbirth, women in our nation are dying at a higher rate than any other developed nation in our world,” said Harris.
