Cisgender women aren't the only people who need them, so why do we talk as though that's the case?
. Between then and now, our caseload has increased by over 100 percent. NYAAF is working for a world where funds like ours don’t have to exist because abortions are free, but in the meantime, it’s clear from the increase that no one is confused about what we're doing, or put off by the fact that we serve a whole spectrum of genders.Many other activists, nonprofits, health centers, and other people involved in the fight for reproductive rights are making these changes as well.
Though it’s taken time to update all materials and properly train staff, it’s worth it. As Hales says, “I started at APWHC five years ago [and was] excited to be helping women and incredibly passionate about abortion care. Clearly, I had some learning and some growth to do. Not just women seek abortion care, and it's high time we all acknowledged and respected that.”
People on the ground like Calla Hales and the abortion funds I know are the most ardent supporters of gender-neutral language, as well as the biggest champions for abortion access. They’re fighting, and they’re gaining ground — no transphobia required. We need to be able to talk about transphobia in order to fight a transphobic society, and TERFs are only getting in the way of progress.
