From a distance of 20 years, the self-trained Miguel Adrover seems clairvoyant, anticipating many of today's trends back then.
, the Spanish designer who shot like a glistening comet through the New York fashion scene in the aughts, was—and remains—unfiltered. He speaks his mind, and he follows his passions. One of those is saving the environment. By inclination and necessity, Adrover was thinking green 20 years ago. In 2007, he reportedly turned down a job with a major label to work with the eco-conscious German company, Hessnatur.
From a distance of 20 years, the self-trained Adrover also seems clairvoyant. Certainly, he can lay claim to some fashion “firsts.” He ventures that he’s probably the first designer to drop out of school at 12 and to receive a Perry Ellis Award while living in a rat-infested basement. Adrover describes himself as an underdog and a champion of underdogs; certainly, he’s an embodiment of the New York version of the American Dream.
Adrover’s first collection, presented in 1999, had all the grit and rawness associated with downtown, and it immediately established him as a designer to watch. The stand-out piece? A tattered “I Love New York” T-shirt with ruffled sleeves.Even if his second collection, for, had been his last, Adrover would still merit a page in fashion history. The show opened with a repurposed coat dress made from a Burberry raincoat turned inside-out and worn backward.
