In an interview, an executive producer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off claimed the series' fights would cost more than Avatar to make in live-action.
With only a few weeks left until the premiere of the highly anticipated anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the series' executive producers made some pretty big comments on the quality of the series' animation, claiming they'd cost as much as Avatar to make in live-action. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the highly awaited but unexpected adaptation of the beloved Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In an interview with EmpireOnline, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off executive producer BenDavid Grabinski hyped up the fight scenes and drew a wild comparison to the blockbuster movie Avatar. Grabinski said in the interview that two fight scenes in episode 2 and 3 of the series would cost a fortune to make it the anime had been a live-action adaptation like the graphic novel's previous big-budget adaptation.
"There’s an extended fight sequence in Episodes 2 and 3 that, if this was a live-action movie, would cost more than Avatar. It would be so unbelievably big. And you don’t have to think that way. You’re not limited. If you made a live-action movie of the show that we did, I think it would be the most expensive movie ever, and you’d be shooting for ten years".
Live-action adaptations of anime have always cost a fortune, the most recent one that comes to mind is the One Piece Netflix series cost $17 million per episode. To replicate the fantastical action scenes from anime and manga in live-action is laborious and needs plenty of resources to bring it to life without sacrificing quality. That's why Grabinski's statements aren't very far-fetched considering the history of live-action anime.
Another detail that seems to back up his claim is the studio animating the series, Science SARU, and their commitment to quality. The makers of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off have demonstrated the incredible quality of their animation with Devil Man Crybaby. The action-packed series had some amazing animation and exhilarating fight scenes. For them to replicate or surpass that bar they've set is very possible.
