Citizens should carry guns to guard against terrorists, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett warned on Wednesday.
Bennett is urging residents of the Middle Eastern nation to take up arms as multiple terrorist attacks in Israel over the past two weeks have killed at least 11 people. The prime minister also vowed to step up efforts to combat the violence."Citizens of Israel, we are currently experiencing a wave of murderous terrorism," Bennett said."What is expected of you, citizens of Israel? Alertness and responsibility. Open your eyes.
“As of now, our forces have carried out more than 200 investigation or arrest operations. The home of the terrorist in Ya’abad has already been mapped for demolition, and we are working to demolish it as soon as possible in order to create deterrence,” he said.Israeli society, when it is tested, knows how to remained composed, resilient and rise to the occasion.
Israel's gun laws are widely considered strict, with gun licenses typically limiting a civilian to one pistol and 50 bullets in his or her possession. In 2021, there were at least 140,000 gun licenses in Israel, accounting for roughly 1.5% of its population, according to Haaretz. The figure does not include members of Israel's security services. But following a stabbing incident last Tuesday in Beersheba, Israeli police announced plans to soften gun policies for civilians.
Israel is reeling from a string of terrorist attacks. On Tuesday, a Palestinian gunman killed at least five people in Bnei Brak, Israel. Two days prior, a gunman killed at least two Israelis and injured others. On March 22, a man stabbed four to death in Beersheba and injured at least two others. ISIS claimed credit for at least two of the attacks.
