Israeli forces responded to unprecedented attacks by Hamas militants from Gaza. Hezbollah said it attacked Israeli targets near the Lebanon border.
BE’ERI, Israel — Abandoned cars and dead bodies dot the highways in southern Israel along the border with the Gaza Strip. Most of the dead appear to be Hamas militants — many of the bodies are dressed in green camouflage fatigues, while others wore civilian clothes. In some places, security forces were collecting the dead; in other areas, they were left on the side of the road. Clashes continued in some towns as Israeli troops moved into the area.
“The gunfire was unlike anything I had ever heard,” said Ambily, a 37-year-old caregiver who hid with the couple as gunmen overran Be’eri early Saturday morning. “It was like something I had only heard before on television or in the movies.” Ambily said they could hear the militants’ voices as they hid in the shelter. Israeli forces moved into the town late Saturday night but were unable to rescue the family until midday Sunday.
