Rightward shift tests candidates in NYC races.
Ahead of Tuesday’s local elections, the rightward slide in a city viewed as a liberal stronghold is apparent in the City Council, where, in the past year, 15 Democrats left the Progressive Caucus and a Republican defected from the Democratic Party.
The nation’s largest city has long been a bastion of liberalism, one where Democrats hold an overwhelming majority in government and where the Democratic Socialists of America hosts its biggest chapter. How much has changed from the “defund the police” push by liberals just two years ago? Moderate Democratic voters have been crossing the aisle to help Republicans chip away at Democrats’ control of the state Legislature and the City Council, motivated by their disdain for the far left.

In 2021, it had three Republican members. Now, there are six, plus two conservative Democrats who caucus with the GOP.from the council’s Progressive Caucus, frustrated with left-wing colleagues who asked them to sign a pledge in part calling for reducing the “size and scope” of the NYPD.
GOP candidates argue that voters see one-party rule and blame it for challenges that include a surge in retail theft and migrant shelters to house the more than 120,000 new arrivals since last year.
