Well … Here’s some haunting news for your Thursday

Photo: Christian Vierig/Getty Images Is your phone addiction bone-deep? Are you incessantly checking your mobile device at work, or does it send you into a spiral when you forget to bring it into the bathroom with you? Now let me ask you this: have you noticed a horn protruding from your skull that was not there before? Did you just notice it now because of something you read on the internet, on your phone? That could be a problem.

New research, which was written up in the Washington Post on Wednesday, suggests that some young people have been sprouting “hornlike spikes” a.k.a. “bone spurs” from the backs of their skulls due to the incessant amount of time their heads tilt forward to stare at their phones. According to the Post, “the forward tilt of the head … shifts weight from the spine to the muscles at the back of the head, causing bone growth in the connecting tendons and ligaments.

The study was conducted, and published in a series of academic papers, by researchers at the University of Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, who say their work demonstrates the first known physiological adaptation to technology . The Post reports that the team began researching the phenomenon three years ago when they noticed that these bone spikes, called enthesophytes, were appearing on younger patients than expected, and for no apparent reason.

Both the placement of the horns and their appearance at such a young age suggests smartphone use as a culprit since, as David Shahar, one of the researchers, told the Post. “These formations take a long time to develop.” Shahar continued, “that means that those individuals who suffer from them probably have been stressing that area since early childhood.”

If this theory holds water, what sort of wellness industry will it have in store for us? Selfie sticks but for checking your phone? Influencer neck braces? Skull shavings? Head-horn bangles?
