In towing, hauling, and off-roading, does the Cybertruck have what American truck buyers are looking for?
Americans love their trucks—so much so that the bestselling vehicle the past four decades has been a truck. It’s no surprise, then, that when a new model enters the mix it’s a big deal. This holds especially true when that new truck comes from Tesla, the company that refuses to follow the same playbook as every other automaker.With the unpainted stainless steel exoskeleton stealing all the attention, it’s easy to forget that beneath the shiny exterioris in fact a pickup.
All Tesla Cybertruck models are fit with a 6-foot bed that’s a touch more than 4 feet wide. With sides that are 20 inches deep at the shallowest point, the Cybertruck bed offers an impressive 56.2 cubic feet of cargo space. And it doesn’t stop there. The truck’s integrated “vault” power retractable bed cover offers the ability to stack gear high in the bed while remaining secure and out of the elements.
Despite the enormous panes of glass that encase the passenger compartment, outward visibility is not one of the Cybertruck’s strong suits. With a high beltline, low seating position, and massive dashboard, we often found ourselves needing to lean up and out of the seat to get a visual on the trail ahead. Tesla’s cameras, though copious, also prove largely useless on the trail because of how they’re angled.
