Contrary to his absurd assertions, Donald Trump is certainly not the best president in our nation's history, but he might be the luckiest man alive. Not only has President Joe Biden conceded that he, like his Republican predecessor, improperly stored classified documents in his personal premises. Now Mike Pence, that paragon of social conservative ethics and top Trump 2024 challenger, has admitted that he has done the same.
Consider that Democratic operatives, the deep state, and the vast intersection of the two have spent nigh on a decade at this point trying to legally bar Trump from the presidency. Two impeachments in a row — the latter far more meritorious than the former — failed to bar Trump from federal office, and countless civil suits, ranging from accusations of sexual harassment and assault to tax evasion and racketeering, have had neither the legal nor publicity might to meaningfully sway his base.
For ordinary folks, a conviction for improperly handling classified documents can land them in prison for years. Trump, too, was probably doomed for some sort of sentence, a reward for deep-state spooks who spent the last eight years dreaming of such.
There is no politically feasible way for prosecutors to try Trump without trying Pence and lambasting Biden. The only person other than Trump who has a reason to smile today is a politician who seeks to beat the final boss the old-fashioned way: at the ballot box.
