Sanaz Toossi’s award-winning comedy/drama ‘English’ examines how language affects self-image; it’s now playing at Berkeley Rep.

“I think there’s been the desire to consume the tragedy of other cultures on stage, and this play doesn’t want to be that,” says director Mina Morita. “It has the joy and simplicity of seeing five people negotiate their own personalities and needs on stage in relationship to this language and their accents and how they’re perceived by their classmates. We’re seeing that play out in a very beautiful, simple way, but underneath there’s this ocean of complexity.
In addition to her work with Crowded Fire, in recent years Morita has directed Qui Nguyen’s “Vietgone” at the Guthrie, Susan Soon He Stanton’s “Today Is My Birthday” at Yale Rep and Lloyd Suh’s “The Chinese Lady” at Magic Theatre. In the past she’s directed for companies such as Shotgun Players, Center Repertory Company, Ferocious Lotus and Just Theater. A few months ago the FrontOffice Foundation awarded her a $25,000 grant for mid-career directors.
