Sam Reid of InterviewWithTheVampire admits that Lestat 'probably has sociopathic tendencies.'
we meet Black Creole pimp Louis de Pointe du Lac in 1910 New Orleans—as does an elegant French aristocrat named Lestat de Lioncourt . Louis becomes an object of both intellectual and carnal fascination for Lestat, and before the end of the series premiere, Louis has accepted Lestat’s “dark gift” and become a vampire, like Lestat himself.
How's he feeling? I think he recognizes why it needed to happen. I think [the realization] probably happens right at the very, very end. And this is something that I was asking throughout the process of the season: "When does he change? How does he change? How does his character develop?" Progressively, as the episodes were coming in, I was realizing that Lestat wasn't changing at all.
But Lestat is also worried that if Louis sticks with his human side too much, then he won't be able to exist at all: you have to embrace what you are to survive. So I think that moment when Louis kills him—which I think was a lovely change [from the book] on Rolin’s part—is that he accepts that it needs to happen. He could have fought more, but he doesn't. I think he probably does feel like it is his actual death in that moment, but I think it feels like he deserved it.
Lestat is a tragic figure: though he’s still sort of alive, we do see how he's brought down by his own hubris. How did you and Bailey and your directors talk about how to play the scenes with Lestat and Claudia in the lead-up to the finale, so that the climax is earned, but also a surprise for the viewer?
There were a lot of micro-rewrites that were happening as the scripts were coming out, and I knew this was the plot twist from quite early on because I needed to know when Lestat knew. We did multiple options, and usually they put in that Iknow. So you can go back and watch the series and see, “Oh, Lestat can hear what they're saying to each other in their heads here.” But definitely by episode six he can hear the entire conversations that they're having. That was a fun thing to do.
