The message coming out of an emergency IOC meeting was clear, a senior member says: The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be postponed until 2021
- The International Olympic Committee speaks its own language and no-one understands it better than senior member Dick Pound, who told Reuters on Monday that a communique setting out a four-week deadline to decide the fate of the 2020 Tokyo Games translated into a postponement.
“But if you are going to carry on with the original objective there is no reason to issue a statement because you have already done that over the past several weeks. That would have added to the uncertainty and anxiety that has led a number of countries, including Canada and Australia, to have already announced the withdrawal of their athletes from a 2020 Olympics.The Japan organising committee, broadcasters, sponsors, athletes, sports federations, who may also have to shift or cancel competitions to accommodate a 2021 Summer Games, all will need to be consulted and heard before a plan can be decided on.
