TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Interventions in education need not wait for Edcom 2
CONGRESS is finally poised to convene the Second Congressional Commission on Education or Edcom 2 this month, half a year after the bill creating it, Republic Act 11899, had lapsed into law. But lawmakers and policymakers should not wait until Edcom 2 completes its work before acting on the problems besetting the education sector.Some, in fact, already sounded the alarm, saying the sector already faces a crisis.
Even if some disagree with calling the situation a crisis, they will be hard put in justifying business as usual in the education sector. Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, co-chairman of Edcom 2, has used 'crisis' to describe the issues that the commission will tackle over the next three years of its legal lifespan.
