The Giants picked up where they left off last season—and not in a good way, as they fell to the Cowboys 35-17. Here are a few initial thoughts about how the game unfolded.

The Giants were trying to convince us that everything would be okay if they alternated two players who not only lacked experience as NFL starters but who missed a large chunk of the preseason due to injuries. Things got so bad for the Hamilton/Baker duo that the Giants turned to rookie Corey Ballentine who did play in the preseason and who was healthy, to stop the bleeding, though by then it was too late.
And why wouldn’t you use Barkley when you get the ball back with 1:13 left in the half when you’re trying to move the ball and at least get into field goal range? Another stumper came when Giants head coach Pat Shurmur apparently forgot that all reviews inside of two minutes are supposed to come from the booth. Yet he threw a challenge flag inside of two minutes on a suspected defensive pass interference play that was not–and was lucky not to draw a flag himself for,as was explained on the television broadcast, unsportsmanlike conduct.
