'I had to be that insensitive prick boyfriend.' On this week's LittleGoldMen, Jack Reynor talks to V.F. about his experience filming Midsommar
talks to Lynn Shelton about how she wrote a film around Marc Maron after their attempt to write a screenplay together slowed down, why she’s very happy the term “mumblecore” has been put to rest, and why makingTake a listen to this week’sLittle Gold MenWell, I have the pleasure of sitting across the table right now from Jack Reynor, one of the stars ofAdvertisement
A lot happens. I should warn listeners that we probably will get into some mild spoilers. So if you haven’t seen the movie yet, just hit pause and go see it and then come back and listen. So the project, can you talk a little bit about how it came to you? Was it a traditional, someone sent you the script and you said, Okay, this seems interesting?HereditaryMidsommar.
By and large I can trust people as long as I’m clear that they are committed to their vision, they know what they want to get and they have a plan for how they’re going to get it. And Ari ticks all those boxes, you know? The really complicated thing that was going on and set was that we were shooting in a valley in incredible heat in the middle of summer.it was so hot, dude. In the middle of summer, like direct sunlight all day.
As I said to you, I always knew that there was going to be a comedic tone, that there was going to be a lot of black humor in it. What really surprised me was that the final 40 minutes of the film, we, the cast, at least, we all stopped laughing and it got serious and it was like, Whoa, this is seriously, seriously heavy. This is a tough watch. And there’s not that many films that I have struggled to sit through because I’m so uncomfortable in that way.
So you mentioned that you’re a voracious watcher of films, which brings us to social media. It’s not a secret Instagram by any means, but it’s a second Instagram account.Interstellar Because I feel like with the way things are now, like with, with streaming services and stuff, everybody’s kind of having stuff pumped at them and they’re just being told what to watch. It’s like, watch the next big franchise movie, watch this. We’re just telling you what to watch. And it’s hard for people to find interesting films. It’s hard for people to find art house cinema. So I just love to write about it.
