A Hopi Tribe wedding is normally a very private affair, but the two families in Arizona allowed the wedding's traditions – passed down generation to generation – to be shared.
After two years of planning, two families united for the 10-day Hopi wedding that followed generations of tradition. Her words triggered a chain reaction inside the house as an assembly line of women shout the same phrase while moving wedding gifts into a back room. These words filled the air every day for 10 days as dozens of family members of Kara Honanie and Lester Honanveama worked together to host a traditional Hopi wedding.
"It's a lifetime commitment, memorable and it was nice to have family gathering from the beginning to the end," she added. "We all worked hard, and did what we could." to witness the 10-day event, normally a very private affair, and share their traditions in text and photo. "You have to have corn to get married in Hopi," Sarah said. "If you don't have corn, I don't know how you'll do it."
"Everything is from the fields and with your hands. It's hard work to prepare all this stuff," Sarah said. "Everything is done with prayers." The wedding was held from March 19 to March 28. Because Sarah's wedding was in March, her daughters got married in the same month. Her other daughter was married in 2014.Mark Henle/The Republic
The length of the wedding varies, depending on how long it takes for the bride's white wedding robes to be completed. One large and one medium robe is handwoven by the uncles of the groom's family. Sarah's wedding lasted nearly a month. Kara Honanie grinds corn on March 22, 2019, in Moenkopi, Arizona. She was responsible for preparing meals for the groom's family and relatives while she stayed at her in-laws' house. On the fourth day, people gathered at the groom's family home for a day of wedding events that left the red stone house covered in mud.
A Hopi police vehicle leads dozens of relatives to Lester Honanveama's family home for a mud fight on March 22, 2019, in Moenkopi, Arizona."Kara did not shell her own corn. Did not wash her corn. Did not make her own kwiptosi. So, go home!" one read. Kwiptosi is a traditional Hopi dish made from white corn.
"Hey. Hey," the other men said as the woman started to attack Lester with mud. Lester only laughed and smiled, making no attempt to stop them, but his family pushed the women back for him."That's not what Lester says," a woman retorted, causing everyone to laugh. The family can't wash the mud off the house after the fight. They have to rely on the rain to do it for them.
Halfway up the road, she was met by the linked arms of the aunties from the mud fight blocking them from moving forward. It was another form of teasing.Sarah Honanie stopped briefly as the women gathered in front of her. She inched forward, causing the women to laugh and shuffle to stay in formation. She moved forward again. As she approaches the house, Sarah and the women were met with a resounding "askwali" and "kwakwhay.
As night falls on the fourth day of the wedding, March 22, 2019, the red stone house has mud splattered across the front door and handprints on the windowsHours before the sun came up on the fifth day, both mothers got to work in the kitchen. They started ripping up yucca root into two turquoise-colored wash bins on the floor in the middle of the kitchen. The house was quiet as the family worked.
On the fifth day of the wedding, March 23, 2019, Sarah Honanie mixes yucca root with water, while Gloria Phillips takes Kara's hair down.Kara sat quietly on the chair to the side watching as her mother moved her hands through the water. Her hair was still up in the butterfly whorls. Her mother-in-law started to take her hair down. This would be the last time Kara wore her hair in the style because it is only worn by unmarried Hopi women.
The couple's hair was washed for about 20 minutes in silence. Only the sound of the water dripping back into the bin and soft-spoken commands from the mothers was heard throughout the house. Then, the couple's hair was intertwined and washed together, bonding them in marriage and signifying their union as husband and wife.
"She belongs to them forever, just like Lester is always going to belong to us, no matter what," Sarah said. Outside, the women set up shop to make somivik. Under a large canopy, tables and benches were lined up on the side as dozens of women work together to make hundreds of pieces sweet cornbread. Inside the kitchen, several tables were set up for people to eat at. One table was covered in food, including Hopi delicacies like sheep head and intestines, and pikami, a sweet pudding.
Using her right hand, she scooped up some of the wet piki mixture and smeared a thin layer across the stone, steam rising with every swipe. She started from the top and in a swiping motion moved down to the bottom until an even, thin layer was spread on the stone. Kara waits for her auntie to give her a bit of sheep brains, which serves as grease to help cook the piki.Afterward, her mother-in-law fixed her hair. It's fashioned into the Hopi style for married women: hair separated down the middle, tied to the side using yarn. Her sideburns were then cut straight across.
Each woman was given a name of the person to deliver the gifts to and pointed in the general direction of where they might be. They delivered the gifts to vehicles parked around the house or knocked on the door of a house down the street. Once delivered, they lined back up to do it again. Walking behind her, Lester carried a freshly butchered sheep on his shoulder and was followed by his family carrying gifts and a pot of stew for the Honanie family.Kara's family happily greeted her at the house, some took photos, others moved back so she could go inside. Kara handed her wedding suitcase to her mother, who passed it to Watson.
