A closely watched April inflation reading Wednesday could influence the Federal Reserve’s strategy over whether to pause its interest-rate increases. Inflation has cooled from its recent peak but remains stubbornly elevated. The Fed aggressively raised rates for more than a year to try to tame inflation by slowing economic activity, and indicated last week that it might be done lifting them for now.
