The public positively welcomes the holding of the 2023 ASEAN Summit in Indonesia. The Summit is considered to be a space for Indonesia to help with regional issues while at the same time continuing to play a strategic role in the regional area.
The magnitude of this support largely stems from hopes for economic improvement. More than half of the respondents who acknowledge this positive impact believe that this summit can produce economic cooperation that benefits Indonesia. This is not separate from the performance of the ASEAN economy, which has grown above the world economic growth average.
Translation: Hopes for resolving the issues in the region are in line with regional security concerns. According to a survey by Litbang Kompas, 19.2 percent of respondents also believe that the outcome of this year's ASEAN summit could solve regional issues and strengthen regional stability. Regarding it, the issue of economic cooperation also holds a significant portion in the minds of the people. About a quarter of the respondents view the issue of cooperation as important to be discussed in this meeting.
The importance of Southeast Asia's regional stability was clearly conveyed by the residents. Based on a survey, 86.1 percent of respondents considered the region's conditions important for Indonesia. Of that number, more than 37 percent felt that the stability of this area was crucial for the country.
The data from Bank Indonesia shows that there are 1.7 million Indonesian citizens working as laborers in several ASEAN countries in the fourth quarter of 2022. Most of them, around 1.6 million individuals, are sent to work in neighboring country Malaysia.
