How Indigenous Enterprise is highlighting their culture and bringing traditional dance around the world.

The group’s latest engagement is a weeklong show at the Joyce Theater in New York, which runs until November 14. Titled “Indigenous Liberation,” the new showcase offers a diverse look at Indigenous dance styles, all performed to music from popular Indigenous groups such as Northern Cree, the Wild Band of Comanches, and Bull Horn.

The men’s fancy war dance Shirley performs, meanwhile, is from the Ponca and Comanche tribes. “It’s representative of a horse,” he says. “In the beginning, it was a really slow, laid-back style of dancing. Then [American soldier] Buffalo Bill wanted to bring dancers overseas, and he asked them to make it more fancy and exciting for the audiences. Now you’ll see a lot of us doing cartwheels and fast footwork.

While “Indigenous Liberation” finishes its New York run at the end of week, its dancers plan to continue carrying forward their traditions and introducing them to new audiences around the globe. “New York City is full of culture, and to be able to bring our Native American culture to it—it feels good to be that representation,” says Lodgepole. “We strive off that type of energy.” The dancers agree that their art is bigger than themselves.
