Some Indiana lawmakers are seeking to clamp down on tracking devices being used to follow someone without their knowledge, a problem that’s come under scrutiny since the technology rolled out.

Sens. Michael Young, R-Indianapolis, and Liz Brown, R-Fort Wayne, authored the two other bills related to tracking devices. Brown said the impetus for her proposal stemmed from hearing anecdotal stories about people dropping the devices in purses or attaching them to cars.A case in Indianapolis last year made national headlines after a woman is said in court records to have used an AirTag to track her boyfriend before allegedly killing him.

All three bills introduced in Indiana’s Senate would heighten the punishment – from a Class C to a Class A misdemeanor − for a person alleged to be unlawfully tracking someone if the accused has a protective order against them.
