India’s demographic shift is an opportunity for the United States | Opinion

As a rapidly developing economy and a major player in the international community, India’s political actions and policies will also have ripple effects across the global community, which may well translate into greater political influence on the global stage and a greater say in international organizations and negotiations.

The rapid growth of India’s population will surely put pressure on the country’s resources, infrastructure and environment, and pose challenges for social and political stability. The country will need to address issues such as poverty, inequality and access to health care and education to ensure that its citizens are leading fulfilling lives and are not forced into vulnerable situations.

In contrast, the United States, which sits a very distant third behind India and China, has an aging population, quite similar to that of China. So, India’s growth provides an opportunity for the United States to align itself diplomatically with a country that it is already aligned with politically, and with a country that will be growing economically for many decades to come.
