Members of the Harlem community where NYPD officer Jason Rivera was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence incident Friday spoke to WNYC/Gothamist about how safe they feel in the city.
Another activist said violence has always been around, but the city’s crisis during the pandemic has exposed the lack of investment in anti-violence measures.
One resident who said he had worked as a NYPD dispatcher said the difference in the neighborhood is noticeable once night falls. That type of surveillance in New York was roundly criticized for disproportionately targeting Black and brown residents, though some supporters argue that it led to lower crime rates across New York and in other cities. A federal judge ruled in 2013 that NYPD's use of stop-and-frisk was unconstitutional.
