‘Palabras Vacías’ offers a compelling take on language and imagery.

Spanish artist Ignasi Aballí's work at the Meadows Museum, titled "Palabras Vacías ," features 27 galvanized steel plates hung at eye level, each with a single word cut through the surface. Aballí says that what his words have in common is that they all “resist being associated with a visual image.

Over the years, curators at the Meadows have managed to present some contemporary art as part of their regular programming. Now, quite recently, thanks to the efforts of the late and much-missed former director of the museum, Mark Roglán, a new program dedicated to current art has taken off. Barcelona-born conceptual artist Ignasi Aballí is the featured artist this year in the Meadows/ARCO Artist Spotlight program, which aims to give an underappreciated Spanish artist a bigger platform in the United States.

Foreboding and dire, words such as “absent,” “transparent,” “inaccessible,” “unknown,” “covered” and “inconceivable” suggest something about the relationship between language and imagery. Since the words themselves have been cut out of the metal, they can come to signify emptiness or the criticism that a preponderance of language becomes so many “empty words.”
