Bishop Italo Dell'Oro never met Pope Benedict XVI in person. He'd seen the leader of the Roman Catholic Church from afar, when he was pontiff, as well as when he was an archbishop and cardinal.. A golden cross given to Dell'Orro by a friend and fellow priest had come from Benedict. Dell'Orro wears the cross often, he said, including on Saturday night as he led Mass at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston.

As he walked into the church, Larry Monks, of Houston, said he would remember Benedict for his strong leadership of the faith. About 6 million Catholics live in Texas, accounting for around 20 percent of the state's population. Catholic missionaries first arrived in what is now Texas in the 1500s. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston serves more than 1.7 million Catholics in 10 counties. It is the largest Roman Catholic diocese in Texas and the fifth largest in the United States.
