Imperial Beach residents welcomed their new mayor and City Council members on Wednesday in a festive ceremony complete with mariachi and bagpipe performances.
“I would never have imagined back so many years ago when I first arrived to in 2001 without a wetsuit and only $500 to my name that I would have the honor of leading our beloved city,” said Aguirre to a large, cheerful crowd during the installation ceremony at brewery Novo Brazil.She reiterated a list of priorities she had campaigned on, including pushing harder to end the Tijuana sewage spills that have shuttered the city’s shoreline, keeping people housed and improving public safety.
“Last, but certainly not least, we will bring the fun back to ,” Aguirre said. “COVID robbed us of so many opportunities to keep us strong and united.”
