Volvo had to do a fair bit of work to get the old V70 R's I-5 to pump out 300 horsepower. With EVs, the engineering is a lot simpler: bigger motors, more juice, tons of power. How much do you want? It all depends on how much battery you're able to carry, so you don't drain them too quickly. A trade-off, but an easier one than Volvo engineers of old faced.—they whup the old V70 R by 102 horsepower, and blows past that old brick's 6.
We don't have any particular intel that Volvo is planning a sporty wagon. But things in the EV era are wide open, with flexible platforms, modular powertrains, and ample torque at the push of a floor-mounted rheostat. Volvo could do a lot worse than emphasize the"R" in Recharge with a high-zoot wagon like you see here. And we hope the company takes a hint.
