A Palatine letter to the editor: The drawing of a horse mourning the loss of Arlington International Racecourse that appeared in your Opinion section was so moving that I felt the need to respond for my fellow horsemen, as well as the hundreds of men and women who were associated with Arlington Park
The drawing of a horse mourning the loss of Arlington International Racecourse that appeared in your Opinion section was so moving that I felt the need to respond for my fellow horsemen, as well as the hundreds of men and women who were associated with Arlington Park and are experiencing the same grief and sense of loss as I. With the stroke of a pen, this artist captured our emotions so profoundly. Ernie Poulos Racing Stables competed there for nearly 50 years.
It wasn't just a job, it was a way of life that brought something new and exciting every day. It was a family -- we competed with each other; however, at the end of the day, we loved each other. The horses stabled at Arlington Park enjoyed the fresh air, green grass and the many visitors who came armed with peppermints for their special treats. To see the"prehistoric looking" machinery tearing apart limb by limb, such an iconic and beautiful facility is too difficult to behold.
